Diagnostic tests help the dentist accurately assess the condition of the teeth, bone tissue, and surrounding structures, make a diagnosis, and develop an optimal treatment plan. To ensure the most informative test results, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the preparation instructions.
1. Dental X-rays
These include periapical radiographs of individual teeth and other types of intraoral radiography. No special preparation is required.
Before the Examination It is necessary to:
- Inform the doctor or radiologist if you are pregnant or suspected of being pregnant;
- Remove removable metal objects in the head and neck area if they could interfere with the examination;
- Follow the specialist's instructions during positioning and imaging.
The examination takes just a few minutes and is performed directly at the clinic with the appropriate equipment.
2. Orthopantomogram (OPG)
An orthopantomogram is a panoramic X-ray of the teeth and jaws. It provides a general overview of the dental system, bone tissue, tooth roots, and other anatomical structures.
No special preparation is required for an OPG. You can eat, drink water, and take your doctor-prescribed medications as usual before the examination.
Immediately before the examination, the specialist may ask you to remove glasses, earrings, necklaces, removable dentures, and other metal objects from the head and neck area that may interfere with the image.
3. Computed tomography (CBCT)
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides a three-dimensional image of teeth, jaws, and surrounding anatomical structures. CBCT can be prescribed for planning implantation, endodontic, surgical, or orthodontic treatment, as well as in other cases as directed by the doctor.
Special preparation for the examination is generally not required.
Before a CBCT scan, please remove any metal objects from the head and neck area, including jewelry, eyeglasses, removable dentures, and other items if requested by the specialist.
During the examination, it is important to remain still and strictly follow the instructions of the medical staff. This helps avoid distortions and obtain a high-quality diagnostic image.
4. Photo protocol
The photographic protocol includes a series of photographs of the patient's teeth, smile, and face. Photographs help the doctor document the initial condition, conduct analysis, plan treatment, and evaluate its results over time.
No complicated preparation is required. Regular oral hygiene is recommended before the photo session. Immediately before the session, the doctor or assistant will prepare the oral cavity if necessary and install special devices to obtain informative photographs.
5. Intraoral scanning
Intraoral scanning allows you to obtain a digital 3D model of your teeth and dental arches without the use of traditional impression materials.
Special preparation is usually not required. Regular oral hygiene is recommended before visiting the clinic.
During the scan, please follow the doctor's instructions and remain as still as possible. The procedure does not require radiation exposure.
6. Important to inform your doctor in advance
Before undergoing a diagnostic examination, be sure to inform the specialist:
- pregnancy or suspected pregnancy - especially before examinations using X-rays;
- about any health conditions that may complicate the examination;
- Inability to remain motionless for a long time;
- Information about previous examinations, if their results may be relevant for diagnosis.
If you have previous examination results—x-rays, CBCT, or other diagnostic materials—bring them with you or provide them to the doctor electronically in advance. A comparison of these examinations over time can provide additional information.
7. Is special preparation necessary?
Most diagnostic dental procedures require no special preparation. Patients can usually eat, drink, and take prescribed medications as usual.
If special preparation is required for a specific examination, the doctor or clinic administrator will notify you in advance.
