What does professional teeth cleaning involve?
Professional oral hygiene consists of several stages:
Treatment with an ultrasonic scaler
Using a special device, the doctor gently removes tartar — the main threat to gum health. The tip of the device creates microscopic vibrations that break up the tartar and separate it from the tooth surface. At the same time, water is delivered to the area to cool the tip and wash away the loosened particles.
Tartar cannot be removed with an ordinary toothbrush. It forms both above and below the gum line, causing inflammation and bleeding. By removing it, we lay the foundation for the health of your teeth and gums.
In the hands of our hygienist, an ultrasonic scaler is completely safe. We work with the utmost care so that only the tartar is affected, leaving the enamel untouched and undamaged.
Cleaning with the Air Flow device
The doctor removes all soft plaque and staining from coffee, tea, wine or tobacco smoke. A jet of air and water carrying an extra-fine powder solution is directed at each tooth. This mixture removes deposits gently and effectively, reaching even the spaces between the teeth.
The teeth become smooth and clean, and their natural shade returns. You feel the effect of the procedure immediately.
Polishing the tooth enamel
We polish the teeth thoroughly and saturate the enamel with minerals. The doctor uses a special brush and paste for polishing. Afterwards the enamel is perfectly smooth, and new plaque finds it far harder to take hold.
In the final stage a strengthening gel or varnish with calcium and fluoride is applied — a kind of vitamin cocktail for the enamel that reduces sensitivity and increases resistance to caries.

Bleeding gums during the procedure are normal
During the cleaning the doctor treats the surface of the tooth below the gum line, reaching it with an instrument. Detaching the gum causes slight bleeding. There is no need to worry: within a few days the gum forms a new epithelial attachment to the now-clean tooth surface.
Increased sensitivity?
You may feel increased sensitivity because tissue previously covered by tartar is now exposed. These areas are weakened and need nourishment and remineralisation, so some discomfort is possible at first. Can an ultrasonic scaler or the Air Flow device damage the enamel?
The Air Flow device cleans the tooth surface gently and cannot damage the enamel. An ultrasonic scaler calls for greater care: if the rules for working with it are not followed, the tooth tissue can be damaged regardless of the manufacturer.
